Millisecond observations of nonlinear wave–electron interaction in electron phase space holes

چکیده

Electron phase space holes (EHs) associated with electron trapping are commonly observed as bipolar electric field signatures in both and laboratory plasma. Until recently, it has not been possible to resolve EHs measurements. We report observations of the plasma sheet boundary layer, here identified separatrix region magnetic reconnection magnetotail. The intense together an beam moving toward X line, showing signs thermalization. Using drift instrument onboard satellites Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we make direct millisecond measurements particle flux individual holes. is measured at a cadence narrow parallel speed range within that trapped electrons. modulations order unity evidence strong nonlinear wave–electron interaction may effectively thermalize beams contribute transforming directed energy thermal energy.

Observations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma

This work presents detailed experimental observations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection events on the Versatile Toroidal Facility. The holes are observed to travel on the order of or faster than the electron thermal speed, and are of large size scale, with diameter of order 60 Debye lengths. In addition, they have 3-D spheroidal structure with approximately unity...

Autoresonant phase-space holes in plasmas.

Electron phase-space holes are formed and controlled in a plasma by adiabatic nonlinear phase locking (autoresonance) with a chirped frequency driving wave. The process has a threshold on the driving amplitude and involves dragging a void region in phase space into the bulk of the distribution via persistent Cherenkov-type resonance.

Evolution of Electron Phase-Space Holes in a 2D Magnetized Plasma

The nonlinear stage of the two-stream instability in a 2D magnetized plasma produces electron phase-space tubes, the counterpart of phase-space holes in a 1D plasma. These tubes align primarily perpendicular to the magnetic field B0 and have self-consistent bipolar electric fields parallel to B0. Such bipolar electric fields have recently been observed in four different regions of the Earth’s s...
